World Stone Skimming Championships Hit By Cheating Scandal After Contestants Tampered With Stones

A massive cheating scandal has rocked the World Stone Skimming Championships (actually a real thing) this week after several competitors were disqualified for tampering with their stones.

BBC News reports more than 2,200 people, from 27 countries, attended this year’s event on the island of Easdale off the west coast of Scotland, which was unfortunately marred by controversy.

As per the rules, stones must come from naturally occurring island slate, however some were found to have been ground into a “suspiciously circular” shape to help them bounce on water.

Participants choose their own stones and judges use a measuring device called the ‘Ring of Truth’ (awesome) to ensure they are no bigger than three inches in diameter.

Each contestant is allowed three skims and stones must bounce at least twice on water before sinking.

Organiser Dr Kyle Matthews AKA the “Toss Master” told Good Morning Scotland that judges heard “rumours and murmurings of some nefarious deeds”.

“There was a little bit of stone doctoring. They had shaped it so that it was perfectly circular and fitted our three inch measurer.

“As it’s a piece of metal, I don’t think we can blame it too much. The problem was we didn’t just notice at the time that they were suspiciously circular.”

Dr Matthews said offenders had “held their hands up and apologised” and that they would “move on to an even greater event next year”.

A guy named Dan Baker did a great job covering the event this year (his wife is a 6x women’s stone skipping champion):

Apparently this year’s winner, Jonathan Jennings, skimmed his stones a cumulative distance of 177m, which is utterly insane. Watch below to get an idea of how ridiculously good at stone skimming these people are:

Incredible. Who even knew that professional stone skimming was a thing? A lot more people now thanks to this cheating scandal. Crazy how that works, isn’t it? In fact I’m not sure that you can ask for better marketing. How soon before the World Stone Skimming Championships is a televised event? Seems like must-watch TV to me.
