Trainee Police Officer Banned For Life For Passing Force Secrets To Drug Dealer Boyfriend

We know the bar is pretty low for police entry these days, but trainee officers with drug dealer boyfriends? Not ideal, really.

Ex-police officer Maryam Ilyas, 20, was still a trainee with West Yorkshire Police when she accessed the force’s computers to find confidential data about her criminal boyfriend and informed him about an operation into his drug dealing.

Ilyas used police computer systems to search for details about her boyfriend on three occasions between March and May 2025.

This was only uncovered after her boyfriend – named only as Mr. J – was arrested in June and officers found WhatsApp messages between the pair, including pictures of money and chats about drugs.

Catherine Hankinson, the force’s former deputy chief constable, ruled that messages between the pair indicated ‘existing relationship’ up to July 2025, even though Ilyas insisted that they split up in January and that she was ‘unaware of his criminal history’.

Hankinson said the officer’s conduct had been ‘repeated’, ‘sustained’ and ‘intentional’.

Before the hearing, Ilyas tried to deny any wrongdoing to The Sun: “I was a student officer.

“I was really new to all this and I feel like I was expected to know everything straight away.”

Ilyas resigned ahead of her disciplinary hearing this week, but she would have been fired anyway, and has now been banned from working with the police for life. So they haven’t exactly thrown the book at her, which is surprising given the seriousness of what she did; accessing confidential police files and passing information on to a known criminal.

Perhaps the actual criminal charges take longer to determine and pursue in court? No mention of it in either The Sun or MailOnline, in any case.

What I really want to know is whether the sole reason she joined the police force was to help out her boyfriend? Probably makes her a keeper, as far as he’s concerned. Then again, all the inside information she sent him clearly wasn’t enough to evade officers as he ended up getting arrested anyway. Oh well, it’s the thought that counts.
