Tommy Robinson Says ‘Three Million Protesters’ Turned Up To Rally, But Police Estimate 150,000
The ‘Unite The Kingdom’ rally has come and gone, and Tommy Robinson has publicly estimated that upward of three million protesters turned up in London at the weekend. Which is about 2.85 million more than the total number of attendees calculated by authorities.
Judging by footage online, the demonstration was clearly massive and would look that way whether the number was 150,000 or three million, but if the Metropolitan Police are to be believed, Robinson is outrageously inflating the numbers. Which is standard practice for these sort of things, to be fair.
Let’s really think about it, though – if three million people did attend the Unite The Kingdom rally, that’s about a third of the population of London, or around one in 25 Brits. I guess it’s possible, given that people from all around the UK (and even abroad) travelled to London for the rally, but it could be an overestimate from the pictures we’ve seen.
Then again, 150,000 seems rather low from the images too. Maybe the truth is somewhere in between?

I mean, that does look like a f***-ton of people, but how are you supposed to confirm the total number for certain? On the ground, it’s impossible to know if it’s 50,000 or 3 million people. You simply can’t see far enough! Surely there are some independent, autistic data wizards on the internet who can figure it out?
Of course, every time there’s one of these sorts of marches, the people who attend are adamant that the media is underrepresenting the numbers. It’s a common phenomenon for people to think crowds are bigger than what they are when they’re in the middle of them, as they focus on the most tightly packed and animated areas. Your brain tends to estimate the same density and scale as the immediate surroundings when imagining the rally as a whole.

On the one hand, you could say the media and/or government are downplaying the numbers to make out that the sentiment on show is not representative of a large percentage of Brits. On the other, you could say Tommy Robinson is inflating the numbers to make out that it was a bigger success than what it really was.
Either way, what comes next? Whether 150,000 or 3 million patriots/supporters turned up, they did some marching, chanting and urinating in public, and then what?
I suppose that remains to be seen…
