Sydney Sweeney Refuses To Apologise For American Eagle Jeans Advert During GQ Interview
Sydney Sweeney is not apologising for the American Eagles ad she starred in back in July, which a load of people claimed was ‘racist master race propaganda’ and ‘promoting eugenics.’
The argument for that was because the tagline to the campaign was “Sydney Sweeney has Great Jeans’, which is obviously a play on words with “jeans/genes”, and is apparently problematic coming from a blue-eyed, blonde-haired, quintessentially American white girl.
In an interview with GQ this week, the interviewer seemingly opened the floor for Sweeney to apologise, ask for forgiveness, or say anything at all about the advert and the backlash to it, but Sweeney was having none of it:

Sweeney simply replied: ‘I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.’
I just love the contrast between the interviewer’s overly-emotional facial gestures, shifty eyes, and unserious Valley-girl cadence, and Sweeney’s direct, unwavering gaze and level tone as she delivered her response. So refreshing to see a famous person who’s genuinely unafraid of crybabies trying to ‘cancel’ her over a complete non-issue that they’ve projected onto an advert about denim jeans.
For what it’s worth, American Eagle’s stock price went flying following the ad, so sounds like it was a big success all round despite the backlash. I mean, it really was a stroke of genius from their marketing team if you think about it: take America’s #1 sex symbol, put her in classic American blue jeans, have her stand next to a Ford Mustang, and boom: watch the money pile up as the outrage draws even more publicity to the product.
Here’s the ad itself in case you missed it:
