Oxford Union President Who ‘Celebrated’ Charlie Kirk’s Death Apologises To Family

The President of the Oxford Union has apologised to Charlie Kirk’s family for comments he made that appeared to celebrate the conservative influencer’s death.

In the immediate aftermath of Kirk’s assassination last September, George Abaraonye sent messages in a WhatsApp group saying ‘Charlie got shot, let’s f—ing go’. I guess even his buddies thought that was a tad f-cked up as the messages were soon leaked online.

In another message, Abaraonye posted on Instagram: “Charlie Kirk got shot loool”.

Just a few months prior, Abaraonye had debated Charlie Kirk at the Oxford Union, and naturally, they clashed on the topic of toxic masculinity and about the impact it posed on young men and women (I’m sure you can guess who was arguing what).

Speaking to The Times, Abaraonye, 20, has now said that he commented on Kirk’s death before seeing the assassination footage and had ‘very little context for what [he] was reacting to’.

Abaraonye told the outlet: ‘As soon as I saw how serious it was, I went on Instagram to apologise.’

Addressing Kirk’s family, Abaraonye apologised to Kirk’s two children and widow.

He said: ‘I want to offer my apologies and my condolences. No one deserves to lose a husband, no child deserves to grow up without a father. I hope that they are able, in some capacity, to move on from what was a tragic event and to that end, I am very sorry.

‘I reacted without nuance and without having done research. I saw a headline and I reacted. I didn’t take into account the nuance or consider that at all when I made the comments.’

Not really sure the nuance matters too much, to be fair, seeing as he had the key information: Charlie Kirk was dead. If he had died in his sleep or been hit by a bus, would it really have made his reaction less despicable?

In any case, Abaraonye, who was studying philosophy, politics and economics at the university, has been ousted from the Union after receiving a vote of no confidence. Turns out many of his peers and a load of Oxford alumni were not happy with him whatsoever. Somehow, I’m not sure he would have apologised otherwise. Not that it makes a difference because I doubt Erika Kirk and her family even know who he is.
