Oxford Union President To Face ‘Disciplinary Proceedings’ Over Charlie Kirk Messages
In case you missed it, incoming Oxford Union president George Abaraonye was absolutely delighted by the news that Charlie Kirk got shot in the neck, with screenshots from his WhatsApp groups and private Instagram page doing the rounds following the incident.
Among the messages:
What made it even more shocking is that George Abaraonye had debated Charlie Kirk, face-to-face, at the Oxford Union earlier this year in May. The two disagreed on the concept of “toxic masculinity” and about the impact it posed on young men and women. Imagine: standing just a few feet away from a man, looking him in the eye, debating him in an academic setting, and then celebrating when that man is brutally executed.
Initially, Oxford Union put out a statement condemning Abaraonye’s social media activity, but reiterated their belief in free speech and indicated no action against Abaraonye would be taken. It seems that has changed now as, according to The Telegraph, Abaraonye is set to face both disciplinary proceedings and a vote of no confidence when he takes up the post next month.
It turns out that 200 life members of the Oxford Union – former Oxford University students who have paid to retain their membership – have expressed their willingness to support a vote of no confidence in Abaraonye’s leadership.

This surpasses the 150 signatures required to bring no-confidence proceedings, and a vote will now be held to remove him as President on October 18.
The vote takes place in person, meaning members must travel to Oxford to vote him out.
In fairness to Abaraonye, he has since deleted his comments, insisting they were made before Kirk’s death was announced… although he later blamed Kirk’s rhetoric for prompting his initial reaction to the shooting. Guy can’t help himself, can he?
