Oxford Student Suspended Over ‘Put Zios In The Ground’ Chant

An Oxford University student has been student after leading a ‘put Zios in the ground’ chant at a pro-Palestinian rally in central London on Saturday, October 11.

The clip quickly went viral and Samuel Williams, from Tunbridge Wells, was soon identified:

Samuel, who studies Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Balliol College, is now under investigation by the Metropolitan Police over the incident, and what’s more, Oxford University has suspended him.

Speaking on a mic at the rally, Samuel had said: “A steadfast and noble resistance in Palestine and in Gaza to look to, to be inspired by and – I don’t want to yap for too long – but a chant that we’ve been workshopping in Oxford that maybe you guys want to join in.

It goes ‘Gaza, Gaza make us proud, put the Zios in the ground.’”

A university spokesperson said it condemned the language used “in the strongest possible terms”, adding:

“The University of Oxford condemns, in the strongest possible terms, any language urging violence against groups of people or expressing any form of racial hatred.

The university’s support for freedom of speech does not extend to any statements, including such language.

Oxford is unequivocal – there is no place for anti-Semitism, harassment, or discrimination within our community. We remain firmly committed to protecting the safety and dignity of all our students and staff.”

Obviously it’s all well and good being pro-Palestinian and protesting the atrocities that have occurred there (and are apparently still occurring, despite the ‘peace deal’), but you simply cannot be calling for death like this, and especially on a microphone in a public setting, while being filmed by someone who’s 100% going to put it online. That’s just asking for the exact kind of trouble that young Samuel has now got; dealing with a police investigation and with his education in jeopardy.

I wonder if they’ll actually expel him if the authorities decide he’s committed a criminal offence? That’d be the second Oxford uni student who’s put their foot in it in the space of a month.
