Man Who Won £1,000,000 On Scratch Card Fighting For Life After ‘Months Of Partying’

A builder who won £1million on a scratch card came close to death after partying for three months.

Adam Lopez, 39, from Norwich, saw his bank balance go from £12.40 to £1,000,012.40 after scooping £1million on a National Lottery scratch card back in July.

Adam immediately quit his job and began enjoying his winnings, which basically meant three months of non-stop partying and indulgence.

Fast forward to September 10 – Adam suffered a bilateral pulmonary embolism (when blood clots block arteries in both lungs) and was rushed to hospital.

Adam told the BBC: ‘I knew what I was doing was going to come to an end eventually, and it nearly came to an end in the worst possible way. It was a massive, massive wake-up call.’

Adam confessed his life had been an ‘absolute rollercoaster’ following the win, with him ‘partying for the last three months’ and ‘burning the candle at both ends’.

He said the money had allowed him to live a life he’d never been able to but admitted he had gone OTT with it.

He added: ‘It became apparent about three weeks ago… with a blood clot in my leg which spread to my lungs.’

I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t breathe. I rang the ambulance, I got wheeled into the ambulance from my house and the biggest life-changing thing I had, was laying in the back of that ambulance and hearing the sirens.’

Fortunately, Adam survived after an 8-day stint in hospital. He now plans to focus on his recovery, which could take six to nine months.

Adam described how he’d bought the winning scratch card at a corner shop when stopping to buy a drink in the summer:

‘Once in the car I played the scratch card and when I saw the £1million, I didn’t know what to do with myself, so shoved the scratch card in the glovebox without even thinking.

‘I always thought I’d scream if I ever won big but when it actually happened, I was stunned into complete silence!’

‘Seeing my balance go from £12.40 to £1,000,012.40 was a real ‘pinch me’ moment!’

No doubt the three months that followed were f***ing awesome, but ultimately Adam overdid it and it nearly cost him his life. I think his biggest f***-up though was quitting his job after winning £1million and then immediately splashing the cash? Would have been better off sticking it into savings and index accounts and using some of the interest as income. You could stick one million quid into the S&P 500 and earn an annual average of 70k per annum. Literally doing nothing!

Well anyway, his best bet now is to lose some weight, eat healthier and spend what time he has left with his family. I’m sure he’s realised all that already and will have no regrets in doing so. Speedy recovery, Adam!
