Man Jumps Onto Train Tracks To Retrieve Woman’s Phone – Only To Steal Device As Security Watch On

It’s no secret that London has a phone-snatching problem, but it’s still pretty shocking to see the lengths at which some of these little rascals will go to in order to steal a person’s phone.

In this footage taken at Ilford Station in East London, a young man appears to be a Good Samaritan as he drops down on the tracks to retrieve a lady’s phone. Instead of giving the phone back to her, he passes it to his mate who runs off with the device:

Sad really. What makes it even worse is that the security guards do sweet F-all about it, making the feeblest attempt ever to get involved and then essentially just watching as the phone thieves run off. Although, to be fair, I’m not sure their salary is worth the risk of being stabbed over.

In a statement, the British Transport Police (BTP) said:

“Officers were contacted at around 6.40pm on Monday 22 September following reports that a woman had her phone stolen at Ilford station.

“A group of youths bumped into the victim, causing her to drop her phone which then fell into the tracks.

“One of the youths retrieved the phone and they then ran away.

“Officers are aware of a video of the incident circulating online and enquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information that could help police should text BTP on 61016 using reference 22 September.”

Not to sound all “old man shouts at cloud”, but it really doesn’t feel like we used to treat each other this badly in public spaces before. Then again, who knows? Maybe it’s been happening all along and we just didn’t know about it because social media wasn’t putting it in our faces all day. Either way, a seriously sad state of affairs. Here’s hoping the police track these boys down (fat chance) and the lady gets her phone back (fatter chance).
