Man Hospitalised After Eating 3kg Of Cola Bottles Over A Three-Day Period

A man is lucky to be alive after spending six days in hospital due to munching 3kg of cola bottles over a three-day period, with doctors reportedly stunned that he survived.

Nathan Rimmington, 33, from South Yorkshire, ordered the bulk £18 bag online after getting a sudden “hankering for cola bottles”, and proceeded to finish the entire thing in three days, which amounts to around 10,460 calories in sugar.

This is obviously a very bad idea to anyone with a functioning brain, and sure enough, the HGV business owner ended up collapsing in agony at home days later, suffering from brutal stomach cramps and dangerously high blood pressure.

Nathan said: ‘I thought it might have been the Sunday roast I’d eaten a few days after finishing the sweets.’

‘But my stomach was in absolute agony. By Wednesday I couldn’t even get out of bed—I was sweating, it was awful.

‘I went to the doctor, but I was literally lying on the floor in the waiting room because the pain was so bad.’

Even though his stomach was hurting after day one, he continued to gorge on the sweets for two more days until the 3kg bag was empty. He even went for a carvery on the third day, before finishing the bag for dessert. The doctor told him his blood pressure was “astronomically high” and advised him to go to hospital.

Just over a week later, Nathan ended up in hospital with agonising stomach cramps, a high temperature and sweats

Nathan continues: ‘The doctors were stumped.

‘They tested me for food poisoning and I had a CT scan but it all came back clear.

‘But after an internal investigation they asked if I liked sweets because I was completely blocked up with gelatin.’

Absolutely shocking that it did not even cross his mind that the 3kg bag of Haribo he annihilated over 3 days was to blame. He had to wait until the doctors told him he was basically 25% cola bottle before he even mentioned it. Madness!

He said he thought 3kg for £18 was a good deal, not knowing the horrendous pain his binge would cause

Nathan was diagnosed with acute diverticulitis, sudden inflammation and infection of the large intestine and needed to be hooked up to IV drips to flush out his system. He now also has to take blood pressure tablets every day. Way to go, Nathan!

He says he hasn’t touched a cola bottle since: ‘It was my own stupid fault and I haven’t eaten a cola bottle since.’

‘It’s like PTSD, I see a cola bottle now and think I’m going to end up in A&E.

‘My advice to avoid the same thing happening to anyone else would be just do it in moderation, don’t go full blase and get kilos at a time like me.’

Haribo ‘declined to comment’ when approached by the BBC, which might actually be the most hilarious part of this story. I mean, what do you want them to say? Best they can probably do is add a “do not consume more than 3kg of these sweets within a 72 hour period” warning on packets from now on. Apparently, people need to be told.
