Man Briefly Wakes Up From Coma To Blame Girlfriend For Causing Car Crash Before Dying

A 22-year-old man woke up from his coma for long enough to blame his girlfriend for causing the car crash that eventually led to his death.

Back in February, Daniel Waterman was travelling with his girlfriend Leigha Mumby along a motorway in Florida when the car swerved off the road and crashed into a tree.

Daniel endured injuries to his spine, head and face, and was left in a coma. Meanwhile, Leigha, who was pregnant at the time, survived her injuries and has since given birth to a baby girl.

Whilst still in a coma, but stable, Daniel was transferred from Florida to a hospital in his native Syracuse, where he briefly regained consciousness and came out of his coma.

During this brief period, Daniel was able to communicate to investigators that his girlfriend had deliberately crashed the car following an argument.

According to a affidavit seen by PEOPLE, Daniel claimed he and Leigha were arguing after he received a text message from another girl. As the couple continued to argue, Daniel claimed that Leigha’s driving became increasingly erratic, speeding up to 90 mph.

He alleged that she told him: “I don’t care what happens, you’ll get what you deserve,” before driving the car into a tree.

Pretty impressive memory of the moments before he was left in a coma, it has to be said. Unfortunately, Daniel would end up developing pneumonia while still in hospital, and it ended up taking his life last month (October). How gutting is that?

In the wake off his death, Leigha Mumby has been charged with vehicular homicide. Daniel’s family are now in the process of starting a legal battle to establish paternity and gain custody of the child that will tragically never get to meet her father.

Daniel’s mum Heather said: “We’ll do whatever we can do to bring her to us. He wanted her raised in New York with his family.”

“It’s our mission in life that if that child is his, that we take that child and teach her what her dad was all about.”

“She has to know him through our actions, through our memories. We will not let him be gone.”

Wild to think that if Daniel had never woken up from his coma, or had died during the crash, that everyone would have just believed it was an accident and Leigha would have got away with it. Of course, she has only been accused at this point, but why would he make it up? No doubt authorities will be able to verify that the text messages between Daniel and his female friend were exchanged shortly before the crash.

In any case, it’s a terrible story. RIP Daniel and thoughts with his friends and family.
