London Council Paints Disabled Bay Around Legally Parked Audi, Slaps Owner With Four Tickets While He’s On Holiday

P1sstake of the century over in Croydon, south London, as a man received four parking tickets when a disabled bay was painted around his legally parked car while he was away on holiday.

CCTV footage shared online shows a contractor measuring and painting the bay, after the owner had parked his car on an unrestricted road outside his home:

While he was on holiday, the unnamed man received a total of four penalty charge notices that were placed on the car between 22 – 26 November. The bay was painted around his parked car on 17 November.

Fortunately, Croydon Council “apologised for the confusion” and confirmed that “the tickets were cancelled a week before the video was uploaded to social media”. Still, it’s hilarious that this could even happen in the first place.

The man told BBC London: “It really put a damper on my holiday because I kept checking [the camera] to see what was wrong and there was nothing I could do.

“I didn’t want to go out and do the things I wanted to do because I was worried about the amount of tickets I was accumulating.

“Without any communication with your community, that’s the wrong way to do it.”

Croydon council said contractors painting the bay around the car was “standard practice” to avoid delays, explaining: “Otherwise they would have to wait for the space to be free, which may have taken weeks.”

“Unfortunately one of our parking attendants was not informed and issued parking tickets.

Imagine if the man didn’t have CCTV? He may not have been able to prove that he was parked there all along. Still, it’s a minor mistake in the grand scheme of things, and was promptly and correctly dealt with by the council. How often can we say that?
