Keir Starmer Says You Will Have To Pay £85 Every Time You Need To Prove Who You Are If You Refuse Digital ID

Reckon you could just opt out of Digital ID by throwing away your smartphone? Well, you could, but according to Keir Starmer, it will mean you fork out £85 every time you need to prove who you are…

This would be a “faff” tax, not a government fine, with Starmer clarifying that there would be “no fining of people for not having” digital ID. Instead, he presented the £85 as a potential fee to a private company for repeatedly proving your identity through traditional, paper-based methods.

Starmer described the scenario as: “You can choose to pay £85 to a company to prove that you are who you are every time you need to. Or you can take the easy route, which is get digital ID”.

Don’t forget – you will probably lose your job if you don’t have digital ID since it will be mandatory for proving the right to work (it will only be voluntary for other services). Meaning if you don’t have digital ID, you probably won’t be able to afford £85 every time you need to prove who you are.

Sir Keir has been hard at work on X trying to convince everyone that digital ID will make life so much better and more convenient:

Unfortunately for him, he ended up getting Community Noted on one of the Tweets:

Looks like digital ID is coming whether we like it or not, and opting out could make life very difficult (and expensive) indeed. Quite the predicament.

For what it’s worth, Keir Starmer assured earlier that there’s ‘absolutely no way’ digital ID will track Brits’ lives. Guess we’ll have to take his word for it?
