Jeremy Clarkson Rushed To Hospital 9 Hours After Branding NHS ‘Old Monster’
Jeremy Clarkson has had to eat a bit of humble pie after being rushed to hospital just hours after publishing a column criticising the NHS.
Clarkson, 65, has ripped into the NHS a few times over the years, but in this most recent article he called it a ‘creaking old monster’ and said it was ‘just not financially viable anymore’.
Nine hours after publishing the column, the Top Gear and Clarkson’s Farm star was rushed to hospital after falling ill.
When asked what prompted the emergency visit, Clarkson said ‘none of your business’ (fair enough), but at least appreciated the irony of the whole thing.

Clarkson wrote in yesterday’s Sunday Times: ‘Nine hours after that piece appeared on the nation’s kitchen tables, I needed to go to hospital in something of a hurry.’
‘I was poorly and I needed urgent hospital treatment and the NHS was my only option.’
He described the experience as ‘Defcon 1 painful’, joking that the doctors and nurses needed to ‘chisel me off the ceiling with a spatula afterwards’. Classic Clarkson.
Whatever happened to him, it was serious enough to warrant an overnight stay.
He added: ‘Mercifully, though, there was no indication they either knew, or cared, who I was when I arrived.’
Clarkson also said he ‘genuinely couldn’t find anything to moan about’ about his treatment in hospital, as he praised the ‘kind’ staff and described the place itself as ‘spotless’. Jeremy Clarkson saying nice, complimentary things about people and their surroundings? Incredible.
He wrote: ‘They even made me better — for which I shall be eternally grateful.’

Unfortunately, the saga hasn’t ‘changed [his] mind about the NHS’, as the Grand Tour star concluded: ‘Yes, it’s an excellent organisation and the frontline staff are superb. But in its current state, we as a nation cannot afford it.’
Well, I’m not sure what makes him such an expert but it’s clearly something he feels passionate about so I gather he’s researched it a fair bit. I’m sure he could afford all the emergency treatment in the world if it came down to it, but nice to get it done for free and at such a high standard, eh?
Clarkson has written previously about his health struggles, writing in 2024 about waking up feeling ‘clammy’ with a tight chest and pins and needles in his arm. He ended up getting a stent fitted to keep his clogged up artery open, as he was otherwise days away from death.
Here’s hoping you won’t need the NHS again anytime soon, Jezza.
