Greta Thunberg Detained By Israeli Forces After ‘Attack’ On Gaza Aid Flotilla

As expected, Greta Thunberg and the Global Sumud Flotilla have been intercepted by the Israeli military on their way to Gaza, making it the second time this year that the Swedish eco warrior’s efforts to break Israel’s naval blockade and deliver food and supplies has failed.

Several vessels of the Gaza aid flotilla were stopped and their passengers transferred to an Israeli port. It’s unclear whether they’ll hold Greta for a little longer this time or whether they’ll just send her back to Sweden like last time.

Just before Greta’s boat was boarded by the IDF, she addressed the camera, declaring Israel must be held accountable for ‘war crimes’:

The Israeli Foreign Ministry wrote on X: “Already, a number of ships from the Hamas-Sumud flotilla have been successfully intercepted and their crews are being brought to an Israeli port. Greta and her peers are safe and sound.”

Bit cheeky to refer to Greta & her team as Hamas, but then we all know the game Israel plays at this point. I’m not even convinced that Greta and her crew expected to make it to Gaza in the first place, but as with last time, the effort/detainment in itself is effective in getting the world to tune in to the situation and see food aid get turned away in the midst of a famine.

So yeah, it does seem like it’s going down pretty much exactly the same way it did back in June. Which is a relief, because some people fully expected Israel to respond more harshly this time around. Will Greta assemble an even bigger team and make a third attempt in the coming months? We’ll have to wait and see what she comes up with.
