George Abaraonye Loses Oxford Union Confidence Vote In Landslide After Charlie Kirk Controversy

In case you missed it, Oxford Union president-elect George Abaraonye, 20, was absolutely delighted by the news that Charlie Kirk got shot in the neck, with screenshots from his WhatsApp groups and private Instagram page doing the rounds following the incident.

What made it even more shocking was that George Abaraonye had debated Charlie Kirk, face-to-face, at the Oxford Union earlier this year in May. The two disagreed on the concept of “toxic masculinity” and about the impact it posed on young men and women. Imagine: standing just a few feet away from a man, looking him in the eye, debating him in an academic setting, and then celebrating when that man is brutally executed.

Initially, Oxford Union put out a statement condemning Abaraonye’s social media activity, but reiterated their belief in free speech and indicated no action against Abaraonye would be taken.

That’s all changed now however, as members of the Oxford Union have this week issued a landslide vote of ‘no confidence’ in Abaraonye, meaning he will no longer head the Union of which he was elected president earlier this year.

Final voting showed there were 1,228 votes for no confidence and 501 votes in favour of George Abaraonye. A further 17 ballots had been either spoiled or void.

Mr Abaraonye sent a text to a group chat saying: 'Charlie Kirk got shot, let's f------ go'

Interestingly, Abarayone wrote on social media that he submitted a motion of no confidence in himself in a bid to reclaim “true accountability and (reaffirm) that the Oxford Union must remain a place where students can make mistakes, apologise sincerely, and learn from them”. So fair play to him for that.

However, he’s since told GB News that the “poll was compromised”. Huh?

The Telegraph reported there had been widespread backlash over Abarayone’s remarks about Charlie Kirk, which prompted dozens of scheduled speakers to pull out and a £500,000 donation to be put on hold.

At that point, it’s surprising that the powers-that-be over at Oxford didn’t oust him themselves, but I guess it always looks better when it’s a democratic decision. Unlucky, George.
