Gal Gadot Has Skipped Venice Film Festival After 1,500 Industry Insiders Signed A Petition To Ban Her
Gal Gadot will be skipping the Venice Film Festival this year after an open letter signed by over 1,500 Italian cinema professionals (including filmmakers, actors and artists) urged organisers of the festival to rescind her invitation due to her support for Israel in the ongoing decimation of Gaza.
No one in Hollywood is more pro-Israel than Gal Gadot, which makes sense given she’s Israeli-born and served in the IDF. In fact she once arranged a private screening of the 47-minute Hamas terror attack that took place on Oct 7, for the benefit of her fellow Hollywood celebrities and executives.
Venice4Palestine, a coalition of Italian film professionals, urged the Venice Film Festival to take a stand against Israel’s policies in Gaza and to withdraw invitations extended to Gal Gadot and Gerard Butler, who hosted fundraising events in the US for the ‘Friends of the Israel Defense Forces’, which directly supports Israeli soldiers.
This is a bit awkward as a film featuring Gal Gadot is being screened at the Festival this year: ‘In The Hand of Dante’, which is actually showing later today (September 3).
I wonder if Gal Gadot was actually a brilliant actress; would people be more forgiving? It’s not like she’s highly regarded for her acting ability (quite the opposite) so it doesn’t seem like a particular shame to exclude her from big time film festivals.
Of course, her exclusion has nothing to do with her artistic work (although that is arguably the bigger crime), but everything to do with her perceived political alignment and public support of the Israeli military.
It’s unclear whether the Venice Film Festival actually withdrew her invitation, but it looks as though she didn’t turn up anyway. Probably for the best really. No point showing up to a party where you’re not wanted, is there?
