Donations For Bondi Beach Hero Hit $1,000,000 Within Hours Of Attack
The legend who snuck up on one of the Bondi Beach gunmen and disarmed him during the mass shooting in Sydney yesterday is still lying wounded in hospital – but he’s got a lot to look forward to once he’s healed up.
A GoFundMe page set up to help out Ahmed Al Ahmed has racked up AU$1 million (£496,694) already – just hours after starting up. Surely that has to be some kind of record?
Here’s the footage that turned Ahmed into a national hero:

The dad-of-two undoubtedly saved multiple lives with his heroics, and ended up being shot twice by the other gunman. Here he is being treated in the aftermath:
Ahmed, a fruit shop owner, was rushed to the hospital where he is due to have multiple surgeries, and is expected to make a full recovery.
His immigration lawyer said Mr al Ahmed ‘doesn’t regret what he did’ and that he would ‘do it again’ despite his injuries and the pain which has ‘started to take a toll on him.’
The lawyer, Sam Issa, told Sydney Morning Herald: ‘He’s not well at all. He’s riddled with bullets. Our hero is struggling at the moment.’
His dad, Mohamed Fatelh al Ahmed, said Ahmed was in the area to meet a friend for a coffee where he heard the gunshots ring out.
He told ABC Australia through a translator: ‘They got there, and were shocked to see armed men firing weapons at terrorists.
‘Their lives were in danger. He noticed one of the armed men in a distance, from him hiding behind a tree.
‘My son is a hero, he served with the police and in the central security forces, and he has the impulse to protect people.
‘When he saw people laying on the ground, and the blood everywhere, immediately his conscience and his soul compelled him to pounce on one of the terrorists and to rid him of his weapon.
‘I feel pride and honour, because my son is a hero of Australia.’

Great stuff. Ahmed’s life will deservedly get much better from here on as he’s set to leave hospital a millionaire, though I’m sure he would be satisfied with just having survived the ordeal and become an Australian hero in the process. The latest is that 15 people were killed in the massacre (well, 16 including one of the gunmen), including a 10-year-old girl. Dozens more were injured.
Can only imagine how much worse the death/injury toll would have been if Ahmed Al Ahmed hadn’t sprung into action. As much as we would all like to say we would do the same in that situation, I am not sure many of us would.

What a guy. Get well soon, champ!
