Dave Reveals He Has Lengthy Conversations With Sadiq Khan Via DM
UK rapper Dave is one of the most highly-acclaimed British musicians of recent years, and it turns out he also has the ear of Sadiq Khan as he revealed that he has lengthy discussions with the London mayor via DM’s on X.
In a new interview, Dave told The Face that he and the mayor have long back-and-forths on issues to do with London.
The ‘Sprinter’ rapper said: “I’m telling him: ‘Yo, this is what I think is going on. Not everyone’s going to have a direct line to Sadiq Khan – but you can put a message out to your MP.”
Bit of a humblebrag there, but OK. We get to write to our local MP, and Dave just casually shoots a DM over to Sadiq Khan. Can he ask him to scrap the ULEZ scheme, at least? I think most Londoners would appreciate that.
The rapper brought up his relationship with the mayor whilst discussing the anti-immigration protests and general flag-shagging that’s been occuring around the UK in recent months.
He said: “They talk about [how] ‘I’m doing this because I love my country’ – I don’t even believe that. There’s big issues going on with your country that you’re not speaking about. This country will be privately owned from top to bottom in no time… I’m not even going to sink to the level of arguing with people that aren’t willing to read. Like, this is a f-cking hype.”
In the interview, Dave decries some of the old music he made, specifically “songs where it is very ostentatious, or borders on being ignorant or super misogynistic”.
He added: “There are some terrible things about men. Like, it’s just true. It’s just true. Too often women have to be the people that start that conversation, and men aren’t even listening. I want to help women. What is a big issue for women? Men. What am I? A man. What do I have to do? I have to take men and what men do apart. To take men apart, what do I have to do? The first person I have to take apart is myself.”
Well, fair play to the guy for maturing as an artist and a person. It’s all well and good writing a club banger where you’re objectifying women and whatnot, but at 27, I guess he’s ready to move past that sort of thing. Some rappers are 40 years old and still making tunes about how many girls they took home from the club (looking at you, Drake).
Anyway, there’s mixed reaction online to Dave having a ‘direct line’ to the mayor of London. Here are some of the things people have been Tweeting:
