Cheerleader ‘Took Selfies Giving Birth Then Left Baby In Closet To Die And Got McDonald’s’

Shocking story out of Lexington, Kentucky over in the US, as a cheerleader reportedly took selfies while giving birth, then left her newborn in a closet to die as she went out to get McDonald’s.

Laken Ashlee Snelling, 21, was taken into custody on August 31 after police found her baby boy’s body wrapped in a towel and a bin liner in the closet of her bedroom.

It’s only now that court documents have revealed more details around Snelling’s behaviour; from hiding her pregnancy to covering up her crime.

University of Kentucky student Snelling gave birth on August 27 around 4am in her off-campus house and told her roommates the noises were from her fainting after not feeling well.

She skipped her 9:30am seminar (fair enough really) and instead ordered McDonald’s via the McDonald’s app and popped out to pick up her food.

Meanwhile, her roommates, who suspected something wasn’t right, went inside her room and discovered a ‘blood-soaked towel on the floor and a plastic bag containing evidence of childbirth’.

After going to McDonald’s, Snelling drove to her university’s clinic but then had second thoughts and returned home instead. At that point, she was arrested.

Snelling told police that she passed out on top of her newborn and woke up to see him ‘turning blue and purple’.

Believing her infant was dead, she wrapped him in a towel, then woke up later at 7.30am and put the baby and placenta in a black bin liner in her closet.

Lexington police discovered ‘images of [Snelling] during labor, photos of her doing things ordinary pregnant women should not be doing, and a concealed or hidden pregnancy’, according to the affidavit.

She’s now been charged with abuse of a corpse, and appeared briefly in court yesterday to waive her right to a preliminary hearing. She’s out on bail and house arrest.

There are still so many questions around this case so hopefully we’ll get to find out what was going through Laken Ashlee Snelling’s mind exactly. When did she realise she was pregnant? Why did she hide the pregnancy? Who’s the father? Does she even know, and did he have any idea that she was pregnant? I doubt it, somehow.

Must be mental health issues at play, t00. I mean, who takes selfies while giving birth? Who hides a baby’s body and then goes out and gets McDonald’s?

It also brings up the abortion debate, as perhaps if abortion was legal in Kentucky then Snelling may have felt she had a way out that didn’t involve hiding her pregnancy and the tragic outcome that followed. Of course, that’s no excuse for what she did.

RIP little man – poor thing didn’t have a chance with a mum like that.
