“Are You Calling Me A Nonce?” – Joey Barton Mishears Prosecutor During Court Case
You may have heard last week that Joey Barton was found guilty of six counts of sending “grossly offensive” social media posts, including calling broadcaster Jeremy Vine a “bike nonce” and comparing TV pundits Lucy Ward and Eni Aluko to serial killer couple Fred and Rose West.
Barton, 43, argued that his comments were simply “crude banter” and “dark and stupid humour”, and that he was the victim of “political prosecution”, but in the end, the ex-footballer was found guilty at Liverpool Crown Court.
The best part of the trial came while Barton was under cross-examination, with prosecutor Peter Wright KC calling Barton’s explanations for his Tweets “nonsense”.
According to the Guardian, Barton responded by asking: “Are you calling me a nonce?”, to which a baffled Wright responded: “No, nonsense.” Lol.
In fairness, it makes sense for Barton to have noncery on the brain given that a part of the charges were his “bike nonce” Tweets at Jeremy Vine, but it’s still pretty funny that he misheard the prosecutor and thought that a legal professional had called him a nonce in court. Maybe he was trying to be funny?
Here are some of the Tweets that have come back to bite Barton on the backside so badly:

Barton is due to be sentenced on 8 December, with his bail conditions prohibiting him from mentioning the three victims in any way before then.
Additionally, Judge Andrew Menary KC warned Barton about wearing a scarf printed with a British flag in the dock as a “stunt”, and told his legal team he would not be permitted to wear it when he is sentenced on 8 December. The guy just can’t catch a break eh?
For more Joey Barton, here he is discussing art with The Guardian. Lol.
