Nigeria’s Head Coach Accuses DR Congo Of ‘Doing Voodoo’ To Win Penalty Shootout

DR Congo have qualified for the 2026 World Cup at the expense of Nigeria after beating them in a penalty shootout during the CAF playoff final, and are now facing accusations of voodoo from Nigeria’s head coach.

Just before the last penalty kick was taken, Éric Sékou Chelle went after the DR Congo bench, claiming they were cheating by doing voodoo before each kick was taken.

He said as much to the reporters afterwards:

Chelle said: “During all the penalties, the guy from DR Congo did some voodoo (black magic). He had something like water and was sprinkling it.”

Now obviously if you’ve got the means to use voodoo in order to qualify for the World Cup, then you should absolutely take full advantage of that. I’m not sure why DR Congo wouldn’t have used the voodoo before or during the game instead of waiting for it to go penalty kicks, but I guess these things work in mysterious ways.

For what it’s worth, DR Congo is denying that they used voodoo during the penalty shootout, but I think it would be more effective if they admitted to it. Just imagine how nervous the opposition teams would get if they knew that they were playing against a team that deploys voodoo in order to win football matches? Peak mind games. It’s like the way Arsenal have mastered set pieces, except even more terrifying than that.

Next time, maybe coach Éric Sékou Chelle should factor the voodoo into his gameplan a bit and work on his voodoo defence. At least he knows for 2032.
