Lostprophets Singer Ian Watkins Has Died After Being Attacked In Prison

Former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins has died after being attacked in prison while serving a 35-year sentence for child sex offences.

Watkins, 48, was stabbed in his cell at Wakefield Prison in West Yorkshire yesterday morning, with a fellow inmate reportedly slashing his throat. Imagine getting your throat slashed first thing in the morning?! Brutal stuff.

The disgraced singer was convicted of 13 child sexual offences in 2013, with charges including conspiring to rape an 11-month-old baby and three counts of sexual assault involving children.

Police and medics rushed to the scene and tried to save Watkins, even airlifting him to hospital, but he ended up dying from blood loss.

A source told The Sun that it was a particularly brutal attack: ‘Watkins has been killed in the most brutal way possible—and the attack was shocking, even by prison standards.’

‘He was targeted by another inmate who shanked him in the neck.

‘Guards were nearby and raced to the scene pretty quickly—but there was nothing they could do, and they could not save him.

‘The inmate who attacked him used a “shank” knife, and he was apprehended pretty quickly.

‘There was not much doubt about who had done it.’

Indeed, police have since confirmed that ‘two men aged 25 and 43 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in police custody’.

The insider added that he had already been ‘attacked a few times inside Wakefield over the last few years’, including an incident two years ago when he was taken hostage by three other prisoners and stabbed multiple times during a six-hour ordeal.

The attack left him in critical condition, but he survived and spent another two years in prison until his life was taken this week. All in all, he spent over a decade in jail getting beaten up before ultimately being killed in one of the most savage ways imaginable.

Watkins was first arrested following the execution of a drugs warrant at his home in 2012, when a large number of computers, mobile phones, and storage devices were seized. It was only because investigators analysed his equipment that they discovered Watkins’ depraved behaviour.

Earlier this this year, Lostprophets co-founder Lee Gaze, 50, addressed the way the band ended for the first time, and how ‘painful’ the whole experience has been for him.

The group, whose frontman Ian Watkins is due to stand trial accused of baby rape and a total of 22 other sex offences at the end of the year, announced the news on its Facebook page. His bandmates said in a statement: "After nearly a year of coming to terms with our heartache, we finally feel ready to announce publicly what we have thought privately for some time. We can no longer continue making or performing music as Lostprophets. MediaMogul v2.11.7p1See PA story SHOWBIZ Lostprophets. Photo credit should read: Yui Mok/PA Wire

Gaze said: ‘Things could’ve been so different. I don’t talk about it much, but I put everything into that band, and it should’ve lasted a lifetime. I never really wronged anyone my whole life, so it seemed like the ultimate punishment.’

Lostprophets had a massive cult following at the time, with Watkins using this as a means of preying on his victims. In fact he had two co-defendants who were fans of his and mothers of his victims, who offered up their babies to be abused by him. They received sentences of 14 and 17 years.

All things considered, it’s pretty amazing that Ian Watkins survived that long in prison before being killed. Even still, there will be an inquiry by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman into how this was allowed to happen. I doubt many tears will be shed over it, though.

P.S. Thoughts and prayer with Ian ‘H’ Watkins from Steps at this difficult time.
